Starting HR GPS
HR GPS is based on research by Dave Ulrich. He describes the HR function’s four roles as follows:
- Strategic Partner: the HR-function contributes by helping the organisation develop strategies, by asking the right questions in order to transform the strategy into concrete actions and by developing HR practices that are in line with the organisation’s strategy.
- Change Agent: as a change agent, the HR function facilitates and coaches the organisation’s transformations and the related changes in culture, work organisation and deployment of human resources.
- Employee Champion: the HR function fosters employees’ development, is involved and, this way, develops the organisation’s human capital.
- Administrative expert: the HR function enables the successful execution of essential operational HR processes, using an efficient HR infrastructure.
Ulrich positions these four roles on two axes. The horizontal axis denotes whether a role is process-oriented or people-oriented. The vertical axis indicates whether operational processes or strategies are more important.
