Retirement at 67: solution or downfall?
The Flemish business community is rather jealous of the Dutch, who have taken the debate about the ratio of older to younger people in the population a step further. Once again, it is the Dutch that have the nerve to face up to the grey clouds hanging over us all. What are we going to do about it? What are we doing making people work longer when we know that most people in their forties are already looking forward to retiring early? Shouldn't we be trying to motivate people rather than force them?
As far as I can see, the key question is: how do we persuade people to continue working longer of their own accord? Deliberately taking on different responsibilities than normal for longer, maybe opting for lower pay in return for more free time, but continuing to use their expertise for the company?
Early retirement was once aimed at getting young people to work. Now it is taken for granted and employees look forward to it. How have we come to this? Why do companies find it so hard to appeal to older employees' existing talents whilst also responding to their desire to ease off a bit?
Maybe you have some ideas about this.
